The Lightning in the East

Directed by Ferdia Durkin

Ireland ∙ 40 MIN ∙ Documentary ∙ 2025 ∙ English ∙ World Premiere

Ferdia Durkin leaves southern Spain on an old BMW GS and points east, riding alone toward Azerbaijan before turning for home in Ireland.

What begins as a long-distance motorcycle journey becomes something more personal: a way through heartbreak, solitude and the uneasy process of figuring out what comes next. Along the way, strangers become friends, the road creates its own rhythm, and Ferdia discovers that travelling alone doesn’t necessarily mean being on your own.

Director Statement

This is a short film documenting an expedition undertaken in 2023-2024, during which I rode a motorbike from the south of Spain to Azerbaijan and back to Ireland. The film reflects a period of realignment and introspection; dealing with heartbreak, learning to be alone, and finding peace through connection and reflection.

I'd like to thank Bryce, Niclas, Silve and Rick for appearing in this film, and everyone who met with me, put me up, helped me and welcomed me, and at home my family for their unwavering support, and Emily - the real adventure throughout all of this.

This is my first film.
