As a boy, Willem Avenant stayed up late with his father watching the Dakar Rally on television and made a promise to himself: one day, he would be there.
Decoding Dakar follows the pursuit of that childhood ambition as Willem sets his sights on one of the toughest events in motorsport. What begins as a dream shared from the sofa becomes a much bigger test of commitment, preparation and just how badly he wants to reach the Dakar start line.

Director's Statement
I love the rally world because of its community, but also, because this sport always produces great stories. With the Dakar being the pinnacle of rally racing, participating even once is a dream for many non-professional racers. Following Willems story explores the start of that dream, and the sacrifices it takes to pursue it.
Director Bio
Eduard Unruh is a Germany-based filmmaker and cinematographer whose work moves between documentary storytelling and the worlds of sport, adventure and automotive culture.
He is drawn to people in motion, riders, athletes and travellers, and to the landscapes, machines and decisions that shape their stories.
